Teams devices

Overview

The Teams Shared Space license has two uses – firstly to license a specific group of Teams devices, and secondly to license certain types of spaces. The licensing of the devices is covered in this section, and the licensing of the spaces is covered here.

The Teams Shared Space license can be used for the following Teams device types:

  • Teams Phone devices deployed in common areas
  • Teams Displays for hot desks
  • Desk docks for hot desks
  • Teams Panels for meeting spaces without a Surface Hub or Microsoft Teams Rooms device
  • Android mobile phones as shared devices

The Teams Shared Space license includes the following service plans:

  • Microsoft Teams Phone
  • Microsoft Intune Plan 2
  • Exchange Online Plan 2 (for cloud-based voicemail capabilities only)

The license doesn’t include any calling minutes, and so these need to be added if there’s a requirement to make and receive PSTN calls.

History

Historically, a Common Area Phone device license was available to license shared phones in a reception area. Then, in November 2022 Microsoft announced that this would be rebranded to the Teams Shared Devices license to cover additional scenarios. It was used to license three specific types of devices that serve a specialized function:

  • Shared phones in a reception area
  • Teams Displays for hot desks
  • Teams Panels for meeting spaces without a Surface Hub or Microsoft Teams Rooms device

The Teams Shared Devices license itself was rebranded to the Teams Shared Space license as part of the wider Teams licensing changes which came into effect on April 1, 2026.
