Teams Live Events

Latest news

On February 3, 2026, Microsoft announced the retirement of Teams Live Events from June 30, 2026. For customers this means that from February 3, 2026 you can’t schedule a Teams Live Event for any date beyond June 30, 2026. However, existing events can still be managed and executed as planned through February 28, 2027.

Microsoft recommend that customers use Town Halls as the replacement, with the table below showing a comparison of the capabilities:

Overview

Teams Live Events were built as an extension of Teams Meetings for organizations to produce and stream events to thousands of attendees, who could watch in real time with high‑quality video and moderated interaction, typically via Q&A. Events could support durations of up to 4 hours and up to 10,000 attendees.

Licensing

Teams Live Events organizers need to be licensed with one of the following licenses:

  • Office 365 E1/E3/E5
  • Microsoft 365 E3/E5/E7

You can choose different production methods for a Teams Live Event, and that might affect the requirement for Office 365/Microsoft 365 licenses for attendees.

History

On September 28, 2023. Microsoft made the original announcement of the retirement of Teams Live Events to take effect from September 30, 2024. This coincided with the launch of Town Halls from October 5, 2023.
