Microsoft Discovery

Microsoft announce the GA of Microsoft Discovery, a brand-new AI platform designed to build and govern agentic workflows for complex scientific and engineering research. It helps researchers coordinate specialised Agents, connect to data, and speed up breakthroughs.

Licensing-wise, it uses Azure resources billed via the standard Pay-As-You-Go route, but there’s also a new billing unit called “User Messages” to track billable Agent actions. To help estimate costs, Microsoft explain that one User Message equals ten backend operations and costs $0.20.

The complementary Discovery App is in preview for smaller teams and students letting you start small before scaling up to the larger computing power of the cloud-hosted Microsoft Discovery services. The App runs locally as a desktop application consuming GitHub Copilot Credits, and thus users do need to be licensed for GitHub Copilot.

GitHub Enterprise Local public preview

Microsoft announce the public preview of GitHub Enterprise Local to enable organisations to deploy GitHub Enterprise Server entirely within a customer’s infrastructure using Azure Local.

GitHub Copilot Free

Microsoft announce the availability of GitHub Copilot Free, aimed at people wanting to get started with GitHub Copilot. It’s restricted to 50 messages and interactions, and 2,000 real-time code suggestions per month, after which you’d need to upgrade to the Pro version costing $10 per month.

GitHub usage-based billing

Microsoft announce that from August 1, 2024 GitHub Enterprise and GitHub Advanced Security are available to be billed through an Azure Subscription for CSP and MCA-E customers. Billing is on a usage basis – if a user starts consuming a licence seat during a month, then customers pay on a prorated basis for that month with no commitment for future months. EA customers who have been able to purchase regular User SLs for these services can continue to do so if they want to.

Visual Studio subscriptions with GitHub Enterprise

Microsoft announce that EA customers can now purchase a Visual Studio subscription with GitHub Enterprise for a combined, lower price.
