Latest news

In January 2026, Microsoft announced the retirement schedule for the standalone SharePoint Online plans. While the services remain available in eligible Office and Microsoft 365 suites, new standalone purchases will no longer be permitted after May 31, 2026. Renewals will still be available until January 2027, after which they’ll remain as part of existing agreements until the full retirement date in December 2029.

Overview

SharePoint Online is a cloud-storage solution designed for team collaboration, in contrast to OneDrive, which is for individuals. It’s available as a standalone plan or included within certain Office 365 and Microsoft 365 licenses. Our Office 365/Microsoft 365 Plan Picker provides an intuitive and interactive configuration tool to help you find the right license based on chosen features. Details of the plans that include SharePoint Online are on the Subscription License Suites website and in the overview table below:

Storage

A license that includes SharePoint Online provides 1 TB of storage in an organization’s tenant as a starting point. This storage pools across all users, meaning it’s shared rather than assigned to any individual. Each purchased license usually adds 10 GB to this pool, with the exception of the Frontline Worker licenses. Visio Online and Project Online also contribute to and consume SharePoint Online storage.

Organizations can obtain additional storage by purchasing the Office 365 Extra File Storage Add‑on for an eligible base license, each one increasing the storage pool by 1 GB. Microsoft introduced a Pay-As-You-Go option in preview in March 2026, with a rollout in June 2026. It offers a flexible, scalable solution for organizations that prefer not to purchase additional storage in advance.
