MICROSOFT FABRIC

Overview

Microsoft Fabric is a platform that allows users to get, create, share, and visualize data using various tools. Power BI is now a component of Microsoft Fabric, and the licensing is covered here.

Fabric Capacity Units

All Microsoft Fabric workloads consume the same Fabric Capacity Units, and in November 2024 Microsoft launched a Fabric SKU Estimator tool in private preview. It entered public preview in April 2025 and aims to help customers to identify the appropriate Fabric Capacity Unit SKU for their needs, based on their data requirements, usage patterns, and workload combinations. There’s a useful page in the Learn documentation that demonstrates how the Fabric SKU Estimator might be used via a comprehensive sample scenario. As of May 2026 the tool remains in preview.

Fabric Capacity Overage

In early 2026 Microsoft announced that Fabric Capacity Overage would be an opt-in feature in Microsoft Fabric to automatically bill for excess capacity on a Pay-As-You-Go basis, and thus protect capacities from being throttled. It’s expected to be in public preview in the first quarter of 2026. Check out the Fabric roadmap for more details.
